Description

By the urea method hydrous titanium oxide was prepared as the adsorbent, and by adding an alumina sol to the mother liquor during preparation an alumina-titania gel was prepared. Some physical properties of these adsorbents and their adsorption capacity of uranium from sea water were measured. The observed results showed that samples for which the pH value of the mother liquor was about 8 at the end of the preparation had a superior adsorption capacity.
Using these samples the batch adsorption of uranium from sea water was performed by the stirred tank and the shallow bed method. By comparing the experimental data for adsorption rate with the calculated curves, values of 0.7-1.4×10-10mm2/s were found for the intraparticle diffusion coefficient based on the liquid-phase concentration of uranyl carbonate ion.
It was concluded that pore diffusion into the macropores was the adsorption rate- determining step during the adsorption process because these values were reasonable as the pore diffusion coefficient in the macropores of the adsorbent.
