Abstract

Light intensity profiles in heterogeneous annular photoreactors were measured. The heterogeneous systems investigated were bubble-dispersed systems, liquid fluidized bed of acrylic resin beads, and beds packed with glass beads, acrylic beads and Pyrex Raschig rings. Some of the packed beds were aerated. The dilutely-dispersed-phase (DDP) model and the concentrated-dispersed-phase (CDP) model, proposed previously, were employed to describe the experimental results. A criterion for choosing either model for a given system was proposed, the criterion being based on such system properties as lamp characteristics, ratio of index of refraction of dispersed phase to that of continuous phase, and specific surface area. The profiles in bubble-dispersed systems were explained well by the DDP model and those in the packed beds by the CDP model.
