While the waste activated sludge in a vertical freezing tube is frozen slowly from the tube side wall, the concentrations of suspended solids, dissolved solids and dissolved organic carbon in the following three samples are measured : unfrozen part, frozen part and extended frozen part which is produced by putting the frozen part into a refrigerator again and freezing it completely. Because suspended solids, dissolved solids and dissolved organic carbon which are contained in the activated sludge are pushed out to the unfrozen part during freezing, their concentrations in the core of the freezing sample are higher than those near the tube wall. Also, the distributions of their concentrations have almost equal shapes. The ratios of dissolved solids and dissolved organic carbon to suspended solids which are taken into the freezing part are constant regardless of freezing time and position in the freezing tube. The weight of dissolved solids which is dissolved out by freezing and thawing treatment is 0.036 gram per 1 gram of suspended solids in the activated sludge, and 38% of dissolved solids corresponds to the dissolved organic carbon.
