Description
Liquid velocity distributions near a vertical flat plate immersed in bubble flow of electrolytic gas evolved under the plate were measured by using a laser doppler velocimeter.<BR>The evolution rate of the electrolytic gas was controlled by varying an electrolytic current. For high H2 gas evolution rate, the dimensionless velocity distributions with use of a characteristic boundary layer thickness and a maximum liquid velocity were similar to that for single-phase natural convection. For low H2 or O2 gas evolution rate and large bubble diameters, the upward velocity reached high value near a peak and ther rapidly decreased far from the peak, and the velocity distribution took a peculiar profile. The dimensionless velocity distribution for H2 gas evolution was expressed by a single line. The characteristic boundary-layer thickness increased with increased in both gas evolution rate and distance from the leading edge of the plate. The maximum upward velocity depended only on the gas evolution rate. The average shear stress calculated from the velocity distribution was independent of the flat-plate length and agreed well with the measured shear stress obtained directly from the drag force of the plate as described in a previous paper.
