Abstract

We are investigating a high dynamic range projector that features double modulation. We already developed a prototype projector with 4096×2160 pixels and demonstrated its extremely high dynamic range of about 1-million to 1. This projector has two modulation blocks. Light output from a lamp is first modulated by a chrominance signal in the first modulation block. After that, the light is further modulated by a luminance signal in the second modulation block and projected. We measured three kinds of MTF data of the projector to evaluate its resolution characteristics, i.e., the MTF for the total projector system, the MTF for the first modulation block, and the MTF for the second modulation block. This projector can display images so that the resolution of the luminance component is retained with the resolution of the chrominance component degraded, because the modulation in the projector is separated into the chrominance modulation and the luminance modulation. We conducted subjective assessment to research the effect of the resolution of the chrominance component on the total image quality. We confirmed that viewers did not notice the image degradation when the resolution of the chrominance component was degraded to a half and noticed the degradation when it was degraded to about a quarter.
