Description

Degradation of silk fibroin induced by UV-irradiation at a wavelength of 254nm and 365nm was studied by stress-strain measurements, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and amino acid analyses.
Fibroin was prepared by degumming of silk fabrics (HABUTAE, 16 Meauke) with potassium thiocyanate. The short wavelength (254nm) induced a larger decrease of the mechanical properties than the longer wavelength (365nm). The degradation temperature of silk fibroin was not related to UV irradiation. The weight loss of fibroin increased slowly with the irradiation time. The weight loss was mainly caused by the evolution of ammonia gas generated by the photochemical degradation of the amino acids composing fibroin.
In the first stages of irradiation, the decomposition of fibroin occured in the amorphous region and later extended to the crystalline region.
