Description

Psoralen was isolated and identified in the leaves of fig, Ficus carica L., as a toxic substance against larvae of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. Larval growth was strongly retarded by feeding the artificial diet containing 1.0mg/g dry diet of this compound. When the fifth-instar larvae were injected with 200μg of psoralen per individual, all the test animals died in a day. In addition to the toxic effect, this chemical exhibited the feeding inhibitory effect against the silkworm at the concentration of 0.3mg/g dry diet.
