Abstract

The process of pre-midgut epithelial cell differentiation was examined in the embryo of Antheraea yamamai with a transmission electron microscope.<br>All the morphologically identifiable changes of the pre-midgut epithelium occured just after blastokinesis at approximately 84hr post-oviposition, which corresponded to dorsal closure. After blastokinesis the pre-midgut epithelium was organized into a stratified epithelium. During 98 and 144hr, the midgut epithelium showed a distinctive character in which the future goblet cells and columnar cells could be clearly identified. The goblet cells formed the valve at the apical cytoplasm of the goblet. Thereafter the columnar cells formed microvilli on their apical surfaces and they had a large apical bulge that grew over the cytoplasm of cells. At around 240hr, the goblet cells were laid beneath the apical surface and mitochondria penetrated into the microvilli of the goblet. Before hatching of insects, many long microvilli developed at the apical border of columnar cells.
