The objective of this paper is to investigate the mechanical properties of composite yarns and fabrics made of spun silk in relation to the twist factor, core filament content and yarn cross-sectional structure.
The composite yarn, i.e., core-spun yarn is formed by the core yarn and the spun silk roving, with the former being wrapped around the latter by the spinning frame through twisting. Namely, the core-spun yarn generally has two layers of core and skin in cross-section. When such a corespun yarn is used as a core, the resultant core-spun yarn exhibits a three-layered structure. These core-spun yarns as the weft are woven across the polyester filament warp in a plain weave.
It was shown that the mechanical properties of composite yarns and fabrics vary with the increase in the twist factor and core filament content, but that the differences in the cross-sectional structures of the two- and three-layered yarns for the same yarn count are not signi ficant.
It was also found that allowances should be made the adaptability represented by the coefficient of friction and stiffness, etc. of core and skin fibers in a composite yarn.
