Description
The “miniature egg” mutant (emi) of Bombyx mori was examined for its phenotypes in comparison with the normal egg. The number of eggs produced per emi female was about a half of that yielded by the normal female. The length of the major and minor axes in the emi mutant egg were significantly smaller than those of the normal, and the weight and yolk protein contents of the emi egg were significantly lower than those of the normal egg. The size and shape as a whole of the emi egg was similar to those of the sm mutant groups. However, the egg of emi was heavier compared to any of the sm mutant eggs. The emi eggs could be fertilized and were able to hatch, unlike the eggs of the sm mutant groups. The fertilization rate and hatchability of emi were 66.0% and 27.5%, respectively. Although the size and weight of the newly hatched larvae from the emi eggs were smaller and lighter than those of the normal larvae, these larvae were able to develop normally until the adult stage.
