Abstract
The yellowness index and maximum wavelength of yellowing raw silk, which was treated with rewinding agents and sodium phosphates used as builders, were measured by irradiating the ultraviolet (UV) and visible lights.
The suppressive effect of rewinding agents on the yellowness of raw silk was analysed in relation to the wavelength dependence of the yellowness index.
In the UV region, a raw silk treated with the rewinding agent A, which consists of a non-ionic active agent, neutral oil, alcohol ester of fatty acid and sulfate salt of fat, and silk treated with sodium phosphates applied as builders, exhibited yellowness indices smaller than those of untreated raw silk. The maximum wavelengths of yellowing raw silk were shifted to values in the range of 285 to 310nm, which were lower than the value of 320nm for the untreated sample.
These results suggest that the rewinding agent A and sodium phosphate compounds operate as UV absorbents. Especially, the yellowing of raw silk treated with sodium phosphate compound is suppressed in the wide range of 302-400nm.
