Description

Experiment were conducted to identify an indicator for the diagnosis of nitrogen nutritional status in mulberry tree. The changes of free amino acid and total nitrogen contents in the leaves were examined in trees grown in a water culture medium with four levels of nitrogen. Total nitrogen content in the leaves varied with the nitrogen levels in the medium. It was demonstrated that when the total nitrogen content in elaves was below 3% (dry matter basis), the tree showed a deficiency in nitrogen and above 5%, an excess in nitrogen. Based on the free amino acid content in the young leaves of mulberry trees grown in the medium with an abundant supply of nitr gen (N 9mM), it was shown that the content of Glu was the highest followed by that of Asn Asp Ala Ser Pro Sar and Arg. Asn content varied conspicuously with the age of the leaves. The content of most of the amino acids changed in parallel with the nitrogen content in leaves, especially, the concentration of Asn Arg Pro His Orn Cit and Lys showed wider variations while the changes in the concentration of Glu Sar and γ-ABA were less conspicuous.<br>Based on these results, it was considered that the contents of Asn or Arg in the young leaves were useful indicators for the diagnosis of the nitrogen nutritional status of mulberry trees.
