Rapid darkening of the insect hemolymph collected from the silkworm (Bombyx mori) larvae was efficiently inhibited by the addition of 0.1% (w/v) sodium thisulf ate. The silkworm hemolymph treated with sodium thiosulf ate was either frozen or freeze-dried after heat treatment (60°C, 15min) followed by centrifugation at 9, 000rpm for 20min, and used for insect cell cultures. Lepdopteran cell lines (Antheraea eucalypti and S. P. C. Bm 36) were cultured in Grace's medium containing fetal bovine serum and the hemolymph treated with sodium thiosulfate.<br>Both treated and untreated hemolymph samples promoted cell growth. Apparently, the S. P. C. Bm 36 cells showed a higher growth rate than the Antheraea eucalypti cells. No adverse effect of sodium thiosulfate was detected in the insect cell cultures for at least 2 months.
