A histological study was carried out on the secretion of sericin from the middle division of the silk gland in larvae of the silkworm (Bm), Chinese wild silkworm (Ws) and their hybrid and the electrophoretic pattern of the polypeptides secreted from the middle division of the silk glands was compared among these larvae. The histological examination revealed that the gland cells in the posterior portion of the middle division secreted inner layer sericin while the gland cells in the middle and the anterior portions secreted middle layer sericin in Ws. In the hybrid larvae of Bm and Ws, the posterior gland cells of the middle division secreted inner layer sericin as in the case of Bm, while the middle and the anterior portions secreted middle and outer layer sericin, respectively. When the polypeptides secreted from the middle division of Ws and Bm were analyzed by electrophoresis, the bands of inner, middle and outer layer sericin were found in Bm, while the band of outer layer sericin was not detected in Ws. Thus, these electrophoretic findings were consistent with the histological examination and the electrophoretic pattern of secretion from the hybrid larva was almost similar to that of Bm.
