Abstract

We have been developing a method to reduce traffic risk by sharing driver's state (e.g. driver's attention level, gaze direction) among traffic participants. In order to confirm effectiveness of our method, we performed an experiment with seven participants. Each participant is required to cross a road as a pedestrian while vehicle is approaching. In our experiment, we share drivers' state using blue lamp installed on the front grille of vehicle that illuminates when driver's state is in a bad condition. As a result of our experiment, in lamp-illuminated condition, 5 participants gave up crossing earlier than in no-illuminated condition (0.82 seconds earlier in average). This means that our method could motivate pedestrians to change their crossing behavior safer.
