Description

The chemical structure and physical properties of the byssus of Atrina pectinata japonica were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomehanical analysis (TMA), amino acid analysis and on the basis of the results of strength and elongation at break point. The values of the birefringence and isotropic refractive index estimated from the refractive index measurements were 0 and 1.560, respectively. However, the fibrous sample showed a very weak interference color on the optical microscopic photographs taken under crossed polaroids. The strength and elongation at break point of a single fibrous specimen were 9g and 5%, respectively. The byssus exhibited a broad endothermic peak which was attributed to the thermal decomposition at around 323°C on the DSC. Amino acid analysis of the fibrous specimen showed in addition to the main constituents Pro, Gly, Ser, Lys, Val, Glu, Ala the presence of very small amounts of Hist, Cys, Met, Ile.
