Description
The dyeing properties of the silk fibers obtained from silkworm larvae reared throughout the instar period on an artificial diet (AD-fibers) or mulberry leaves (ML-fibers) were evaluated in using direct, acid and basic dyes. The AD-fibers absorbed slightly larger amounts of water vapor and liquid water than the ML-fibers. The AD-fibers adsorbed slightly larger amounts of direct dyes in equilibrium at 80°C than the ML-fibers. There were no differences in the equilibrium dyeing properties between both fibers when acid and basic dyes were used. The AD-fibers showed a slightly higher dyeing rate with acid dyes at 30°C than the ML-fibers. From these results, it was concluded that the AD-fibers may have a coarser structure than the ML-fibers.
