Effect of both juvenile hormone analogue (JHA) and anti-juvenoid (AJH) treatment on the duration of the feeding period, quantitative characters of cocoon and cocoon filament size were investigated in several silkworm varieties. The cocoon filament from the strain, Bombyx mori, HN101×C23, an improved variety, preserved as a race producing thick filaments, and treated with the JHA during the 3rd, 4th, 5th instar period showed maxmum values with the corresponding values in the control. However, the largest value was approximately similar to that of the control and the plateau showing the largest value for the cocoon filament was extended by the JHA treatment. The size of the cocoon filament of the precocious trimolter silkworms induced by the AJH treatment during the 3rd instar period was half that of the control with a uniform size. The general trend of the size of the cocoon filament from the standard strain, Bombyx mori, N5·N6×C5·C6, an improved variety, preserved as a race producing thin filaments and of the cocoon filament from the standard variety, Bombyx mori, N134×C135, bore a certain similarity to that of the cocoon filament from the strain, Bombyx mori, HN101×C23.
