The authors have investigated the seasonal differences in total number of a bacterium, Pseudomonas mori in dead leaves on the mulberry field under several conditions.<br>The results obtained are as follows:<br>(1) The bacterium which had overwintered in the dead leaves on the mulberry field survived until the middle of May, when the mulberry sprouted in MATSUMOTO area.<br>(2) The bacterium occurred in great number before the winter season and decreased gradually with the progress of time, even though the survival was calculated as the order of 102-103per 10mg of dry powder obtained from the dead leaves from the begining of April through the end of May.<br>(3) The duration of existence of the bacteriaum was longer under the low temperature and dry condition, while it was shorter under the high temperature and wet one in laboratory conditions.<br>(4) The persistence of the bacteriaum in the dead leaves on the mulberry field was affected by the climatic conditions, such as temperature and moisture, during the winter to spring seasons.<br>(5) The young shoot of the mulberry was infected with the bacterium, which passed through the winter season. This fact suggests that the overwintered bacterium is the source of the primary infection of the disease in the spring season.
