Abstract

The surface structure of the abnormal silks which were in 3-layers (outer, middle and inner layers) of degummed floss obtained from the outside of cocoons were studied by means of the electron microscope.
The results are as follows;
(1) The surface structure in outer layer.
As a whole, the flattening or gently hill phases, typical cracks and ups and downs were observed.
(2) The surface structure in middle layer.
Numerous fibers screwed towards principal axis and vertical parts with various length, width and pitch were observed.
(3) The surface structure in inner layer.
Considerable fibers stretched towards principal axis and typical forms along the line of both sides were observed.
Judging from the result stated in (1), (2) and (3), it is presumed that those abnormal parts were formed when the movement of the head of silkworm stopped momentarily because of its footing formation, and that its drawing were interrupted with high temperature and humidity.
These movements were performed most remarkably in outer layer of floss from the outside of cocoons, in middle layer they were performed slightly, and scarcely done in inner layer.
