Description

The authors used a qualitative method based on the testing method for antibacterial textiles (JIS L 1902) to investigate antibacterial characteristics of the dyeing liquid extracted from several kinds of plants and dyed fabrics. Results demonstrated that Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus reflected antibacterial characteristics of Phellodendron amurense, but no plants showed antibacterial characteristics for Klebsiella pneumoniae. Subsequently, the authors used a quantitative method to examine the antibacterial characteristics of cloths dyed by Phellodendron amurense and Allium cepa for Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus in changing dyeing conditions. Results showed that antibacterial characteristics increased with more dyeing; we confirmed that copper used for the mordant possessed strong antibacterial action. Bacteria static activity and sterilization activity composed the mitigating force against the bacteria. Therefore, we inferred that when deterrent force decreases, the bacteria is affected by bacteria static activity; conversely, when sterilization activity force increases, the bacteria is affected by sterilization activity.<br>
