Description
We found two different symptoms of the proctocele induced by the intrahaemocoelic injection of ecdysterone in the 5th instar. The one was the petaloid proctocele and the other the diplosacked proctocele. The cuticular sheath of the rectum was exposed inversely from the anus of the former, while the cuticular sheath of both colon and rectum came out in the latter. And the latter appeared frequently under the condition inducing larval-pupal apolysis, but rather rarely under that inducing surplus larval apolysis.
In the proctocele larvae, the integument around the anus was partially in the state of apolysis and it was decided that the exfoliation of the cuticular sheath in the hindgut stepped forward than the exuviation of the integument. The appearing mechanisms of the proctocele would be as follows; the exfoliated cuticular sheath of the hindgut detached freely from its fixing points with the supporting muscles, and came out inversely from the anus by the internal pressure of the body cavity. Thus, the occurence of the proctocele larvae caused from the injection of ecdysterone might be due to the different hormone-susceptibility between the epidermis and the hindgut epithelium.
Besides the proctocele larvae, those discharging the rosary-shaped or lorate faeces from the anus were observed. This abnormality appeared under the experimental condition which was inappropriate to induce the surplus larval apolysis, but an abnormally enhanced renewal activity of the cuticular sheath onto the colon epithelium was recognized in this case. It would be also caused by the abnormal endocrine condition in the larval body.
