Abstract

1. Analysis of the body fluid of the 5th-instar larvae with gel filtration chromatography through sephadex G-10 column showed that both total and individual concentrations of the free nucleoside and the free base, especially guanine, guanosine, adenine, adenosine, uracil and uridine, were quite different between larvae reared on an artificial feed and on mulberry leaves.
2. Amino acid analysis of the larval body fluid showed that ornithine concentration was markedly higher, but total concentrations of essential amino acids and the concentrations of glycine, threonine, proline, serine and tyrosine, which were main material for the biosynthesis of the silkprotein, were considerably lower when the larvae were fed on an artificial feed.
3. The metabolism of nucleic acids and amino acids appears abnormal in larvae fed on an artificial feed, and in consequence the biosynthesis of the silkprotein is considered to be less active than in larvae fed on mulberry leaves.
