抄録

Present paper deals with histochemical observations on the defense reactions of host plant, such as formation of lignin-like material and cork layer, with the progress of penetration of Helicobasidium mompa into mulberry root.<br>1. At the early stage of the penetrating process of the fungus into cork tissue, a secondary cork layer is formed at the part of cork cambium.<br>2. After the fungus passed through cork tissue and cork cambium, discoloration to brown and formation of lignin-like material and cork layer are observed in the cortical layer cells, and the grade of progress of this disease is checked by formation of lignin-like material and cork layer.<br>3. When hyphae of this fungus passed through epidermis were spreading in the cortical layer cells, they were enclosed with lignin-like material and cork layer, the former was inside and the latter was outside, which were formed in the cortical layer cells.<br>4. In the cases of the penetrating process of the fungus into mulberry root, the defense reaction is not always observed.<br>The aforementioned results suggest that mulberry root has a resistance to the invasion of the fungus but the invasion of the fungus is not completely blocked by the defense reactions.
