Description
Mechanical and structural properties of silk fibroin fibers modified by various kinds of monoand bi-functional epoxides were investigated and analysed on the basis of the result of strength and elongation at break point as well as by x-ray diffractometry and thermomechanical analysis. The four epoxides agents used were Glycidol (G), Ethylene Glycol Diglycidyl Ether (E), Tolyl Glycidyl Ether (T) and Resorcinol Diglycidyl Ether (R).<br>Values for the strength and elongation at break point of the modified silk fibroin fibers tended to approach a maximum when the fibers were treated at 68-70°C for 1 hr except for the G treatment. These mechanical values of the modified silk fibers increased clearly, when the samples were treated with bi-functional epoxides, such as E and R. However, the molecular orientation and the degree of crystallinity of the modified silk fibers remained unchanged in spite of the epoxide treatment, silk fibers modified by each of the four epoxides began to contract at about 340°C, a temperature which is higher by 20°C than that for untreated silk fiber, owing to the entropic elasticity of the silk fibroin. It is thus estimated that the epoxide agents react with the side chains (Lys. Hist. Arg. Try....) of the silk fibroin, along with the formation of crosslinking between the side chains of the silk fibroin and the epoxide agent.
