Abstract

The recessive mutant “albino 2” was found as a spontaneous occurrence. Homozygotes for albino 2 gene exhibit normal black color soon after the hatching and devlop quite normally in the first instar so that they can not be distinguished from normal type during the first larval instar. They are characterized by a departure from the normal type soon after the first molt representing the distinct albino features and die within 30 hours after the ecdysis.<br>Mating experiments revealed that albino 2 gene is allelic to al, and the gene received the symbol al2. Linkage tests showed the ale locus to be on the fifth chromosome apart 11.2 from the re locus which is localized at 31.7. Precise localization of al was made by three-point experiments involving pe, re and al. By the data obtained from F2 segregation the recombination value between pe and re was calculated as 24.6%, the value of re-al was 5.8% and pe-al was 29.3%. The locus of al is indicated by the correction factor as 6.2 to the right of re, Hence the al gene is localized at 37.9 on the fifth chromosome.
