Abstract

The authors studied on the relation between the scattering of pollen grains and the direction of the wind. Researches were repeated nine times during the period of flowering in April, 1953 and 1954. In order to catch pollen grains the authors used slide glasses coated with vaseline and placed horizontally about 1 meter above the ground. The slides thus prepared were arranged on several places within the limits of about 100m from the edge of the mulberry-field, including the interior of the field. So far as these experiments point out it can be said that the pollen grains are able to scatter to the point more than 100m. distant from the mulberry trees. Comparing the numbers of pollen grains which were received by the slides situated on varions places, the followings were known: the frequency of scattering pollen grains on the inner part of the mulberry field was most abundant; on the circumference of the field the frequency was the second; and that on the exterior of the field the least. It is assumed that the scattering of pollen grains has a close connection with the direction of the wind.
