Description

The strains of some 1, 000 species of filamentous fungi were examined for their ability to produce ergot alkaloids in surface and submerged cultures under certain conditions. Besides Asp. fumigatus strain, 19 strains belonging widely to the classes Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes and Fungi imperfecti were found to have a definite ability of producing clavine alkaloids: The alkaline ether extracts obtained from the cultures of these strains gave a positive color test with Ehrlich's reagent, and paper chromatography of each of these extracts showed this to be due to a number of substances, at least one of which was identical in RF value with either elymoclavine, agroclavine (secaclavine), festuclavine (pyroclavine or costaclavine), fumigaclavine A, B or C.
