In this paper, structure of the two water soluble polysaccharides isolated from the fruit bodies of Lentinus edodes was reported.<br> One, obtained by trichloroacetic acid extraction, is an a-glucan of the glycogen type with an average chain length of about 6 glucose residues. The results of iodine-reaction, β-amylolysis and Concanavalin-A reaction supported this result.<br> The other, obtained by hot water extraction, is a b-glucan. Gas-liquid chromato-graphy of the methylated glucan indicated the presence of 2, 3, 4, 6-tetra-, 2, 3, 4-tri-, 2, 4, 6-tri-and 2, 3, 6-tri-O-methyl-D-glucose. Glucose, gentiobiose, laminaribiose and cellobiose were obtained by acetolysis. This glucan consumed 1.51 moles of periodate with production of 0.64 mole of formic acid per mole of anhydroglucose. These results showed that this glucan consisted of β-D-glucopyranose units and 2/3 of the units are 1, 6 link-ages and 1/3 of the units are 1, 3 and 1, 4 linkages.
