In this paper, the authors found the minimum capacity of a tank from the volumes of both the solution that had returned to the tank and the amount which had been pumped out, and rationalized the design of the tank by carrying out an investigation concerning the gross capacity of the tank that is provided with various rooms and by studying its shape etc.
The results obtained are summerized as follows:
(1) For extending the design of the drain pipe, the minimum capacity of the tank (net volume with no rooms) can be determined by using the elapsed time and the discharge in the distal section of the drain pipe.
(2) The minimum capacity of the tank also can be given by directly using the approximate expressions of the drain hydrograph.
(3) Corrections are given in cases where accurate determination of the tank's capacity can be made or by taking time lag into consideration concerning the flow of drain branches in large facilities.
(4) By using the maximum oveflow depth in vats and the volume of the drain pipe, growers of hydroponics can very easily calculate the minimum capacity of the tank.
(5) By the investigations of the various rooms for the minimum capacity of the tank, shapes, and material costs, it became clear that a gross capacity of nearly 10 m3 per 10 are was suitable and the cylindrical shape was most economical.
(6) In each of the above-mentioned cases, the utility and suitability of these methods were verified by comparing them with the measured values of an actual system.
