Fundamental response properties of the vibrating system with the so called hysteretic Hardin-type restoring force, which is based on the hyperbolic stress-strain relationship, were investigated. Then, the differences of the represented response obtained from the different methods of numerical analysis were discussed.
The expression of the hysteretic Hardin restoring force was inserted in the equation of motion for a single-degree-of-freedom system.Using the integral representation of the sinusoidal solution of the system, the response curves for displacement and acceleration were obtained. These curves show that a larger exciting force produces a higher displacement response (can it be said this way) lower acceleration magnification, and also produces a lower resonant frequency.
Next, to find the accuracy of the numerical representation of the analysis, the transcient vibration, and the random excitation response of the system were computed using three different numericai methods, namely, the equivalent linear analysis, nonlinear skelton curve analysis, and nonlinear hysteretic analysis. These results show that as for the acceleration response is concerned, the equivalent linear method is a good representation of hysteretic behavior. But as for the displacement response in the larger strain level, the equivalent linear method fails to properly express hysteretic behavior.
