There are many studies on the flow of groundwater in large paddy irrigated fields, but no universal formula has been given up to now dealing with semipermeable layer in soils. Author's formula which was obtained as a result of some experiments at the test fields and around the Lake Biwa is as follows:<BR>_??_<BR>where ζ: pressure of groundwater at depth x k, k': transmission coefficient of permeable layer and that of semi-permeable one t: time m=√b/K K=kH/a a: strain coefficient of semi-permeable layer H: depth of impervious stratum.<BR>Also the formulas obtained under various boundary conditions are given by (2), (3) and (4):<BR>(i) When t→∞<BR>ζ=ζ0·e-mt...(2)<BR>(ii) When (ζ) x=0=ζ0 (t), (ζ) x=∞=0, (ζ)t=0=0, <BR>_??_(3)<BR>(iii) When (ζ) x=0=ζ0 (t) =ζ0·sinσt, t →∞<BR>_??_(4)<BR>These formulas have been verified by experiments and calculations, as shown in the text.
