Abstract

In recent years, aggregates have become increasingly varied, with a corresponding expansion of their range of properties, making the application of existing measurement methods increasingly difficult. Aggregate properties, including the density and water absorption rate of fine aggregate, are of great importance for concrete mix design. The Committee on Concreting Technologies established the Fine Aggregate Quality Working Group for the purpose of organizing density and water absorption coefficient measurement methods for fine aggregate, and based on their measurement principles, to investigate the properties of fine aggregate that make the application of these measurement methods difficult. This report summarizes the test results obtained as part of these activities and presents the differences in the results obtained from density and water absorption coefficient measurements of fine aggregates with a wide range of properties performed with methods that are based on differing measurement principles.
