Abstract

The finite element Galerkin model of two-dimensional steady supercritical flow is developed with application of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. Considering various flow phases presented by prescription of the governing parameters which were acquired in normalizing the fundamental differential equations, the convergence and accuracy of solution, affected by their magnitudes, are in detail investigated to ascertain the inherent properties of the model. An attempt is also made to get the facts about the effect of element size. The validity of the model is argued through its practical application to the flow in a rectangular expansion for which experimental and other numerical results are available. The results show that the model is applicable to the flows when the velocity is not too high.
