For efficient operations of aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES), a fundamental knowledge of the means of controlling thermal energy lost from an aquifer is required. The heat and water transfer experiments have been conducted in order to clarify the simultaneous movement of heat and water in the soil column layered using fine sand and coarse sand. In this column, a layer with low water content i. e. low net thermal conductivity was set up in a coarse sand layer. Changes in temperature, heat flux, and pressure head in the soil column were examined. Furthermore, by calculating the net and apparent thermal conductivity of soil, the possibility of a low water content layer to control the loss of heat was estimated.<BR>As a result, the followings were clear. Firstly water movement driven by thermal gradient occurred and influenced temperature in the soil column. Secondly, in spite of the order of two layers, the apparent thermal conductivity was much greater than the net one in the low water content layer in consequence of the heat flux corresponding with the water flux. The loss of heat also from the saturated zone through the unsaturated zone was not controlled in the soil column.
