Abstract
It is important to clear the effects of roots on the sandy soil shear strength properties. Laboratory and field shear testes were performed on undisturbed weathered granite soils taken from several sites. In order to investigate the mechanism of reinforcement, model tests were carried out using artificial materials to simulate the roots. Results of tests were compared with the theoretical analyses. The theoretical model developed can be used to predict the shear strength increase of the soil if the tensile strength of the roots is fully mobilized.
