Description

The residual strength is indispensable to the evaluation of stability of the reactivated landslide and the firsttime slide occurring in the bedrock with geological discontinuities. The laboratory test indicates the curvilineared line of the residual strength envelope, and the fixed strength parameters can not be given. A new determination method was developed to dissolve this difficulty.<BR>In the curvilineared envelope of the residual strength, the residual friction coefficient was found to decrease with the increasing effective normal stress at the lower half of the effective normal stress, while it was constant at the higher half of the effective normal stress. Based on this finding, the residual strength envelope was separated into two parts of the lower and higher halves of the effective normal stress, and strength parameters were determined at each part. As a result, cr was not zero at the lower half of the effective normal stress but zero at the higher half, and φr was larger at the lower half than at the higher half. The proposed method is operational but useful and rational to determine the residual strength parameters from the curvilineared strength envelope depending on the magnitude of the effective normal stress.
