An intracardiac pressure transducer has been developed by using an electro-fiberoptic system. The fiberoptic catheter-tip microtransducer is so secure inherently from electrical shock hazards that it has been desired to apply this type of transducer to clinical use.<BR>In this paper, the designing method of the present microtransducer is theoretically studied, and the precise fabrication of its miniaturized diaphragm is described in detail. Light transfer coefficient η which is represented by the ratio of an incident light energy into a transmitting single fiber to an outgoing light energy from a receiving fiber is calculated and the total transfer coefficient is obtained by summing the η values for all the fiber pairs. As a result, the optimum distribution of the fibers at the measuring tip can be determined. For the present transducer, the miniaturized diaphragm at the catheter-tip is precisely fabricated by a photoetchiug technique. The corrugations on the diaphragm are theoretically designed under the theory of an anisotropic plastic thin plate. Cutting the diaphragms and engraving the corrugations can be performed simultaneously with the etching process with a good reproducibility. The various characteristics of the present transducer has been examined. From several data in the clinical uses, the present transducer has been found quite excellent for a catheter-tip micromanometer.
