Description

As one of key technologies for the board level optical interconnection including both board-toboard and chip-to-chip, we have studied on“90-degree optical path change” using optical fibers with a 45-degree micro mirror. Ray trace simulation and optical coupling experiments between a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) and an optical fiber with a 45-degree micro mirror were performed. Coupling efficiency of -1.40 dB and the alignment tolerance of -20/+16 μm for the fiber with -1 dB down were obtained experimentally. The ray trace simulation suggested that the lens effect of the fiber outer shape improved the alignment tolerance of ±4 μm in comparison with a waveguide having a rectangular cross-section.
