Description
When graphical symbols are used on equipment, their size, line width and optical contrast against their background needs to be decided. The original meaning of these graphical symbols should be visually perceptible as intended. For this purpose, a provision of guideline has been internationally established. However, only the size of reproduced graphical symbols proportional to the viewing distance is regulated with the proportional constant of 100. In reality, varieties of optical contrasts are used, which should result in different degrees of perception. In this paper, visual contrast sensitivity characteristics are introduced into image processing in order to emulate the visual appearance of graphical symbols under different contrast conditions, so that some problems of the international guideline are revealed, and an improvement is proposed.
