Description
To count the passing people through the gate of the buildings or the entertainment halls is considered important for the office security or the marketing researches. In this paper, an automatic counting method of the passing people through the gate by using a stereo camera is proposed. First, in the proposed method, the stereo images of the passers are obtained in series. As a next step, pixels on a measurement line which is set at right angle with the direction of movement of passers are picked up and arranged along the time axis. As a result, a space-time image which includes just the data of the passing people over the measurement line is generated. Next, in a similar manner, stereo space-time image is generated and the three dimensional information is extracted from a pair of stereo images. But by only a pair of space-time image, each moving direction of the passing people can not be recognized. Therefore, two measurement lines are set on the floor of the inside and outside of the gate. By detecting which line the person passes early, the moving directions of the passing people are recognized. Finally, the incoming persons and the outgoing persons could be measured by counting the people data with each hight data and direction information. In this paper, we describe the algorithm of counting the passing people using the stereo space-time images and show some experimental results obtained by using a simple experimental system to verify effectiveness of the proposed method.
