Abstract
The use of asbestos gaskets in pipe-flanges has already been prohibited in Japan. Nowadays, non-asbestos gaskets, of which materials are PTFE, expanded graphite, etc. , are used in industries. Gasket users expect the non-asbestos gaskets to have better performance than that of asbestos gasket. So far, non-asbestos gaskets have not gained high reliability as gasket users do not have long term data in terms of the life of gaskets. <br>In this paper, the thermal endurance life of non-asbestos gaskets and asbestos gaskets were tested. The gaskets were held at several constant temperatures, such as 200°C, 214°C, 260°C, 280°C and 300°C, and the weight loss, the change of axial bolt force and sealability are measured using a test rig. The thermal endurance life is estimated using the Arrhenius equation and discussions are made on the non-asbestos-gasket life.
