Abstract

Unnecessary trials and errors have to be thoroughly eliminated to continue efficient and stable development of copiers and printers responding to the market demands for higher functions at lower prices. Our investigation into the past design changes, however, revealed that half of them were due to the recurrences of known problems. To prevent such problems, we have developed EAST (Engineering Assisting System). EAST visualizes the product development know-how to make sure all designers automatically take advantage of it when necessary. This paper shows how EAST achieves 1) unification of design procedures, 2) efficient reference of the design knowledge, 3) accumulation of the design knowledge, and 4) reference of the design processes. It also illustrates the effects of EAST in the actual design work with examples and reports 80% reduction of man-hours EAST resulted in.
