Description

The ground effect of the impinging jet is experimentally investigated by using the pressure sensitive paint (PSP). Two cases, that is, a vertical landing rocket with a plug nozzle and a spacecraft landing on a planet without atmosphere are considered. These experiments are conducted in the atmosphere and in the vacuum chamber, respectively. The pressure distribution on the ground and the base of the model is successfully measured through the ground plate made from transparent material. In the former case, the PSP images reveal the characteristics of the ground effect of the impinging jet on the pressure distribution over the vehicle surface, for example, the cell structure in the pressure distribution on the nozzle surface and the pressure drop near the nozzle exit on the vehicle base. In the latter case, the results show that the PSP method is also promising in the research of low pressure rarefied flows.
