Description

CFRP pressure vessels are used as the hydrogen storage system of fuel cell vehicles (FCV). FCV must drive a distance of at least 500 km in comparison with today's gasoline-fueled vehicles. Therefore, the storage pressure of hydrogen is raised from 35 to 70 MPa. This paper presents a method how to increase the burst pressure of CFRP pressure vessels. For increasing the burst pressure of the CFRP pressure vessel, the shape memory alloy (SMA) fiber memorized a compressive stress is wound around the outer surface of cylindrical part of the CFRP pressure vessel. When the CFRP pressure vessel is received the internal pressure, its circumferential tensile stress is reduced by the compressive stress of the SMA fiber and it leads to increase of the burst pressure of the CFRP pressure vessel. The experimental behavior of the CFRP pressure vessel under internal pressure is compared with numerical results and they agree well each other. Furthermore, optimum design of the CFRP pressure vessel by the change of winding method of SMA wire is numerically obtained. For confirming the optimum winding method of SMA wire, confirmation experiments were done.
