The degree of compaction of land surface trodden on by reindeer and Yeso Sika deer was determined with an easily-handled corn-penetrometer to assess trafficability. The obtained data showed the impact made by hooves of the two species which differ in hoof shape, walking style and feeding area conditions. The surface of the reindeer feeding area was compacted by their wide-hooved tread and distinctive walking style. The hard layer was uncovered by rain erosion in the Yeso Sika deer feeding area, due to engraving with the deers sharp hooves which kept the hard soil constantly exposed. These results suggest the need for optimal management of feeding conditions for the two species in order to maintain the ecosystem. Jpn. J. Livest. Management, 30(3) : 81-85. 1995.
