The present experiment aimed to obtain fundamental knowledge about the emission of ammonia gas from equine manure. Manure obtained from anglo-arab and thoroughbred were mixed prior to examination. Amounts/day were determined before collection. Emission of ammonia gases from 90g urine and 90g feces in 900ml bottle was determined by precision detector tube for ammonia gas every 12 hours for a period of 120 hours in temperature-controlled room at 28±2 ℃. Furthermore the emission of ammonia gas from manure consisting of 30g feces and 90g urine was also determined, because the excretion ratio of feces and urine was 1:3. Two types of manure were prepared at this time, one in which urine is spread on the feces and the other in which urine and feces are mixed. Ammonia gas emission from feces was very low and its range was between 21.3 to 33.0 ppm during the observation period. Ammonia gas emission from urine indicated a peak (246 ppm/h) attained during 72 to 84 hours. Emission of ammonia gas from manure indicated a peak (3000 ppm) attained during 24 to 36 hours, regardless of the differences in types. When the obtained data were calculated to the real scale, the intensity of smell was less than 1 in the case of feces only. The intensity of smell was 3 to 3.5 in the case of urine only and was more than 5 in the case of manure. These data suggest that the separation of feces and urine at an early stage is useful for the prevention of ammonia gas emission in the equine pen.
