Description

Small vessel disease (SVD) is a pathological condition in small vessels of various sizes. It is classified to several subtypes including hypertensive small vessel disease (SVD type 1) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA; SVD type 2). Most of cerebral small vessel disease falls into either of these two subtypes or their combination. Type 1 SVD is characterized by lacunar infarctions, white matter lesions and macro-and micro-bleeds (MBs) and is named with subcortical vascular dementia when the patient has dementia. Type 2 SVD is frequently observed in Alzheimer’s disease and is featured by subcortical hemorrhage and white matter lesions. This paper aims to reveal the nosology and symptomatology of SVD and further overview the relationship between these two types of SVD.
