Description

Background and purpose: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a serious risk factor for stroke, and the prevalence of AF is on the rise. In Japan, anticoagulant therapy in AF patients is insufficient. Therefore, we conducted a questionnaire survey on the present status of AF awareness in the general population. Methods: A questionnaire on the recognition of AF was administered to 168 participants in a public lecture on stroke held at Toyama city in 2013. Results: The proportion of participants who knew about AF was 43%, whereas only 24% and 11% of the participants knew that AF is a risk factor for stroke, and medical treatment is available to prevent stroke in people with AF, respectively. Elderly participants (≥65 years old) were significantly less aware of AF than non-elderly participants (<65 years old). Conclusions: The present survey revealed a very low level of the awareness of AF itself, the subsequent occurrence of ischemic stroke, and its preventive medicine in the general population, indicating that the educational efforts to enhance the above-mentioned knowledge about AF in the general population should be made as soon as possible.
