Description

A 62-year-old man was admitted to our university hospital for further examination of a tumor in the pancreas tail. Ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic mass, 3cm in size, in the pancreas tail. Plain and enhanced computed tomography showed a low density and well enhanced tumor at the arterial phase, respectively. A hypervascular tumor was observed by arteriography and cystic lesions were not detectable in the tumor by any imaging modalities including endoscopic ultrasonography. Blood chemistry and pancreatic endocrine hormonal analyses showed no abnormality. A non-functional endocrine tumor of the pancreas was considered, and spleen preserving distal pancreatectomy was performed. Macroscopically, no cystic lesion was observed but the pathological findings showed many cystic lesions in the tumor. The epithelium of the cyst was composed of columular cells which were glycogen-rich and positive for PAS staining. The final pathological diagnosis was solid variant serous cystoadenoma of the pancreas. We herein report a case and review of 13 reported cases in the Japanese literature.<br>
